Smartphones are a compelling invention of the modern-day world. With the advent of newer technology, there is no doubt that smartphones are the most critical necessities we need to have mandatorily in our lives.
So many new phones are released each day with numerous add-on features and specs that are more advanced than their predecessor. Most of the people use only two smartphone Android and iPhone (iOS operating system).
While androids are produced by almost every large tech giant in the world, Apple solely makes iPhones. The user interface, software, and the hardware of both these types of smartphones are entirely different.
Though the only common denominating factor between both the smartphones is the use of sim cards for its operation. However, sim card removal in iPhone vs. Android phones is different.
What is a sim card?
First, let us get a broader picture of what is a sim card?
A sim card stores the specific information of the user with a particular network provider. It uses the network signal to connect the phone to the nearest tower and provide connectivity. Every Sim Card is registered to a specific designated mobile number that is unique and cannot be changed.
Yes, one can port to a different network. however, the sim card will retain the same number. A specific chipset is placed on every Sim card that contains the necessary information about the user and the data used using the particular number.
How many types of SIM card?
Sim cards are primarily of 3 main types.
Standard Sim Card
These are larger sim cards most commonly used in older generation smartphones. They were easy to use in the 2nd and 3rd generation Symbian handsets too. Iphones also used standard sim cards until its third-generation series were on the market.
Micro Sim Card
These sim cards have a chipset with a slightly larger tray border around them. It is one of the most common types of sim cards used even today too. Samsung J series, iPhone 4rth Generation, Xiaomi up to its 4rth generation, etc., all used Micro Sim card.
Nano Sim Card
The current most sim card, also known as Nano Sim, has a tiny chip alone without any sim tray border. Currently, this is the sim card type in use for every Android and iPhone model being released.
Since a sim card is the most vital component to activate the network in any phone, it is crucial to know how to remove it from one phone and transfer it to another. Sim card removal in iPhone vs. Android is slightly different. If one is not careful enough, it can cause more damage than good.
How to remove & insert SIM card in iPhone?
The newer generation of the Apple iPhones all uses Nano Sim today. However, iPhones do not have a removable battery or removable back panels due to the basic design concept and minimalist look. Instead, there is a designated sim slot outside. It is far easier to insert and remove sim cards on iPhones today. The steps involved in sim removal are
Step 1. Firstly it is essential to power off the phone.
Step 2. The sim card slot is located on the side face of the iPhones. The best way to identify it is a tiny hole in the side panel.
Step 3. Every iPhone is supplied with a sim removal tool that looks like a tiny pin. Please insert it into the hold and slightly press it inward.
Step 4. The sim card tray immediately pops open.
Step 5. Interestingly, if the sim removal tool is missing, you can use paperclips or hairpins to insert into the hole for sim tray removal.
Step 6. Place the sim card into the designated slot.
Step 7. Make sure to slide in the sim tray in the exact direction you remove it. If you overturn the tray by mistake and try to place it in the slot, the tray or the sim card can get damaged.
Step 8. The sim card chip should always be facing upwards.
Step 9. Sometimes there is confusion due to the presence of two slots on the tray. The larger slot is for the micro sd card, and the smaller space is for the nano sim card.
Step 10. Some Iphones also have dual sim card slots. Make sure to remember which space you are selecting to place the sim card into.
Step 11. Once the tray is inserted and locked in place, switch on the phone.
Step 12. In case your iPhone has a dual sim function, make sure to select SIm Card1 or Sim Card 2 when the network activates based on which slot you placed the Simcard in.
How to remove & insert SIM card in Android?
Android phones are different in make and model from iPhones as various companies manufacture them. While the majority of the Android telephones use Nano Sim Cards, there are still a few older generation phones that use Micro Sim cards. Additionally, there are Android Phones with removable back panels with sim slots present inside.
IN cases with Android smartphones with a removable back panel, the sim slot has a clip-on tray or sliding tray where the sim cards need to be placed. Once the sim is locked in place, the back panel is closed, and the user can switch on the phone.
However, the newer generation of Android models has a similar side tray to iPhones. The ejector tool is used to slide out the tray after switching it off. Once the sim cards are in their designated spot, the tray is inserted back in its place.
Take some precautions while removing and inserting the SIM
Though the process of removal and Insertion of a Simcard seems like a simple one, there are a few tips one must always keep in mind while handling sim cards.
- Never try to scrub or scratch the sim card chip surface. In case you want to clean it, wipe it with a microfibre cloth.
- Always ensure to switch off the phone before sim card insertion or removal.
- If you lose the sim ejector tool, do not use safety pins and needles to remove the tray. Instead, you can use any thin tool like a paperclip or hair clip with a blunt endpoint.
